Understanding Kentucky’s New Medical Cannabis Program

Medical cannabis is a new option for patients in Kentucky, and we know you may have questions. We're here to provide clear, up-to-date information to help you feel confident and informed every step of the way. Below, you'll find answers to some of the most common questions about eligibility, the certification process, and what to expect as the program continues to develop.

  • Yes. Senate Bill 47 legalized the use of medical cannabis in Kentucky for patients with qualifying conditions. The certification program is active and operational.

  • While documentation is helpful, it’s not always required. Our provider will work with you to understand your health history and determine eligibility.

  • No. We provide the medical certification you need to apply. The card itself is issued through the official Kentucky Medical Cannabis Program after application.

  • Most patients complete their evaluation and receive certification within 24–48 hours. State processing times may vary.

  • To obtain your Kentucky Medical Cannabis Card, you’ll first need a medical evaluation by a state-authorized provider. If you're approved, you’ll receive the necessary certification to submit your application to the state. Our team will guide you through every step — from evaluation to submission — so you can access the care you need with confidence.

  • You must be a Kentucky resident, at least 18 years of age (or have a legal caregiver), and free from disqualifying felony convictions. You’ll also need a written certification from an authorized medical provider confirming that you have a qualifying medical condition and could benefit from cannabis-based treatment.

  • Patients may qualify if they’ve been diagnosed with one or more of the following conditions:

    • Any form or stage of cancer

    • Chronic, severe, or intractable pain

    • Epilepsy or other seizure disorders

    • Multiple sclerosis, muscle spasms, or spasticity

    • Chronic nausea or cyclical vomiting syndrome

    • Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

  • The fee for your medical cannabis evaluation and certification is $175, payable by credit card, debit card, or cash. Additionally, the state application fee is $25, which is submitted during the registration process.

  • Certified patients will be able to purchase products such as edibles, tinctures, capsules, vape cartridges, oils, and concentrates. However, smoking cannabis will not be permitted under Kentucky law (SB 47). The law was designed to prioritize patient safety while ensuring access to medical relief.

  • Your card may offer legal protections related to criminal charges or child custody, but it does not guarantee employment protection. Workplace drug policies remain at the discretion of your employer, and cannabis use may still be restricted in some job settings.

  • Only providers who are specially authorized by the state may issue medical cannabis certifications. Many primary care providers do not currently participate in the program. Our licensed practitioners are approved to evaluate and certify patients in full compliance with Kentucky law.

  • Medical cannabis laws vary by state. While some states like Michigan and Missouri accept out-of-state medical cards, others — such as Illinois and Ohio — do not. Always check local laws before traveling with cannabis.

  • No. Under current Kentucky law, home cultivation is not permitted, even with a valid medical card. All medical cannabis must be obtained through licensed and regulated dispensaries within the state.
